Bristol, Tennessee – Joey Logano took the lead at Bristol on Saturday night in his No. 22 Ford Fusion race car with just 44 laps to go and then won the race to the finish line in amazing fashion. This first win at Bristol Motor Speedway cements his position in the race to the Sprint Cup Chase in two weeks time and serves notice to the other drivers with three wins this season that he’s definitely ready to battle for the championship.

Currently, the three teammates Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Logano’s teammate Brad Keselowski also have three race wins this Sprint Cup season. It appears the main battle for the Sprint Cup Championship for 2014 is going to be headed by the three drivers for Hendrick Motorsports and two for Penske Racing.

During the after race interview Joey Logano said he wants this win to say one thing, “That we can win the thing. What a Shell/Pennzoil Ford there. When I woke up this morning I wasn’t sure if we were a winning car or not, but Todd Gordon is good salesman.  He pretty much sold me into thinking we had a winning car and we made some small adjustments on it all night and got our third win of the year.  What a year we’re having.  I’m having so much fun.  The past six or seven races have been unbelievable.  We’ve been running up front and it’s just been so much fun.  I’ve got to thank Shell, obviously Ford, Sprint and everyone that helps out at Penske – Discount Tire, Hertz, Auto Trader.  This is like one of the three biggest races of the year, I feel like – the Bristol Night race – and to have this in the record books with your name on it is really, really cool.”  HOW IMPORTANT WAS PATIENCE TONIGHT?  “Important and not important.  On the restart there when we were sixth with tires I said, ‘I’ve got to capitalize right now.’  So I went as hard as I could, raced the 20 really hard and got everybody I could and then I was trying to keep up.  The 20 was really fast and then there at the end I had something going wrong.  I don’t know if it was the brakes or a hub failing in the rear, but it started vibrating really bad and getting really loose.  I’m like, ‘Oh, come on.  A couple more laps, a couple more laps.’  So of course there’s always added drama at the end that you don’t want, but patience didn’t come into play and then when I was racing the 24 there at the end it did come into play.  We were able to make there at the end.”

“I feel like the Bristol night race is maybe the third or fourth biggest race of the year,” Logano said. “Just the atmosphere before the race, if it doesn’t pump you up, nothing does. It’s just the baddest mamma jamma race track ever built.”

Joey Logano Wins Third Nationwide Series Race of 2013 in 5-Hour Energy 200

Joey Logano wins the 2013 Nationwide Series 5-Hour Energy 200

Dover, Delaware (September 28, 2013) – Joey Logano raced his way into the history books again on Saturday, winning his fourth straight NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Dover International Speedway in the 5-Hour Energy 200. Joey Logano is now the only NASCAR Nationwide driver to ever win four times on the Monster Mile of Dover and the only driver to win four consecutive events in any racing series at the mile long superspeedway in Delaware.

When asked about his historic day, Joey answered. “This has been my favorite place ever since I started here. Even when I barrel-rolled down the straightaway, it’s still my favorite place.”

With four straight wins at the Monster Mile, it is not hard to see why this track is his favorite place to race. The race on Saturday at the old track was recorded as the fastest ever in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, beating the previous record of 130.152 set in 1998 by Dale Earnhardt. Jr. by 1.082 mph.

The fast race was really due to the 160 laps they raced under a green flag. Logano had the pole advantage and due to this was ahead for the first 18 laps, before Kyle Busch made his move. By the time they reached the 26th lap things became a lot tighter on the track, when the caution flag was raised due to a spin by Brian Scott. The caution flag was raised again during Lap 37, when Donnie Neuenberger ran into the wall. By this time in the race, the race car of Joey Logano was running noticeably slower on the track. This prompted Joey to come into the pits for a long stop, during which time he had this to say.

“[Busch was] really fast in the beginning of the race and we were really loose,” Logano said. “I even wanted to stop at the caution before that. But we decided to stay out a little bit longer and got that next caution. We took that hit on pit road making these big adjustments. “These Nationwide races are short and you have to make big swings early. [Crew chief] Jeremy [Bullins] made some big swings on this thing and got it close, and we just needed the one more stop to fine tune it. I was just able to run my race and take care of the tires, and do the right things in the car.”

The extended pit stop worked wonders for the race car of Logano and Busch had elected to stay out on the track and gain ground, instead of pitting. When Busch eventually had to head into the pit during Lap 87, the rest of the field followed his example a few laps later, and this put Busch behind the rest of the racers on pit stops, and would mean he would need to stop one more time before the end of the race.

By this time the tires of Logano were 30 laps newer than the race tires of Busch and he started to rapidly gain ground on the leader. He caught Busch on Lap 141 and from that point on there was nothing but open race track between him and the finish line.

Logano “When your car drives good here and you have what you need, when you have lapped traffic it doesn’t even slow you down,” Logano said. “When you’re loose, you get stuck. In these Nationwide races, being able to get through the lapped traffic as quick as possible is key to winning these things.”

At the press conference after the 5-Hour Energy 200 Joey Logano had a few things to say.

Joey Logano – No. 22 Hertz Ford Mustang – We had a fast race car.  I don’t know what else I need to say.  This Hertz Ford was really good when we unloaded and then throughout practice the track changed on us a little bit and last night we made some good changes on the race car.  Jeremy and all the guys and girls on the team did a good job tuning the thing up for me.  We started the race too loose and they went for it.  These Nationwide races are short.  You’ve got to make big swings real early and I feel like Jeremy and I have worked enough together now that when I say loose and how loose he kind of knows how much it is and he made some big swings on this thing and got it pretty close.  Then we needed one more stop to just kind of fine-tune it.  After that second green-flag stop it was dialed in pretty good.  I was just able to run my race and take care of the tires, make sure I was doing the right things in the car, and get another victory.  It’s just really cool to get four in a row here at Dover.  That’s pretty awesome.  It’s been my favorite race track ever since I started here, yes, even when I barrel-rolled down the back straightaway it’s still my favorite place, and I think we showed it today.  Hopefully, my Shell/Pennzoil Ford tomorrow is just as fast as this one.  If that’s the case, it’s gonna be a lot of fun.”

The No. 22 Hertz Ford

The crew chief for the No. 22 Hertz Ford Mustang, Jeremy Bullins, also had few comments on the race and car.

Jeremy Bullins – Crew Chief -No. 22 Hertz Ford Mustang “It means a lot that we’re continuing to build good cars.  This is another brand new car that the guys at the shop built.  We just keep pushing forward and, like Joey said, the first race here we learned a lot about what the car needs for him.  I feel like we’ve learned a lot about, like what he says, when he says ‘loose’ we’re learning how to work on it and we’re getting closer with that.  We talked about it before the race, there were a lot of streaks to be kept alive today and I think we managed to pull that off, so it was just a great day on pit road.  The guys did a good job.  The whole team just did an excellent job today.”

When asked why it has been so hard for him to have success on the race track on Sunday at Dover International Speedway, Joey answered.

Joey Logano “I tell you what, on the Cup side I really do feel like I’ve had some strong cars here.  I’ve had a lot of misfortune in the Cup races, but I’ve had a lot of fast race cars here that are capable of running top five.  I’ve had loose wheels.  I’ve had flat tires.  I’ve had motors blowing up.  I’ve gone through a lot here at this race track and that’s why if you look at the stats like you did, you wouldn’t know that we ran as well as we did, but we have run really well at this race track on the Cup side.  I’m expecting tomorrow to be similar, I hope.  As far as the way the Chase has gone, Chicago, we were doing everything we were supposed to do.  We got the pole and we were leading laps, but unfortunately things break on race cars every now and again and that cost us a really good finish there and a lot of points, obviously.  Last week at Loudon, it’s probably my toughest race track that I go to.  I go from the place that I hate the most to the place I love the most this week and we came out of there with a 14^th-place finish, which is not good, but, for me, is decent actually.  We come here this weekend and we know that we can still run up there.  We still have a lot of momentum on this team and we know what we did to get in the Chase and how good we are, and we’ve just got to keep pushing forward and keep fighting.  I always say that the 22 team over there never quits and they never die and that’s what we did to get here.  We’re not out of it yet.  We can still win it.  We’ve got a tough road ahead of us and we really can’t have a bad race in the next eight, but we can still do it.  We’re not out yet.  The fat lady is not singing yet.  She’s warming up her voice, but she’s not singing yet.”

Was it surprising to see this race run 160 laps to the finish line without a caution and were you surprised how easily you caught up to Busch after the series of green flags evened out? 

Joey Logano “Yes and yes.  They were really fast in the beginning of the race.  We were really loose, so I even wanted to stop the caution before that because we were hanging on.  We were pretty loose, but we decided to stay out a little bit longer and then got that next caution.  We took our hit on pit road a little bit making these big adjustments that we were gonna lose a couple spots and some guys took two, and then we were able to drive our way close to the front and then, obviously, he didn’t pit so he has to pit earlier than us, and then at that point we have newer tires so we were able to kind of run him back down.  I don’t really know what happened after that.  I was just driving in circles as fast as I could.”

“That’s when we just came out on new tires and I radioed in to Jeremy and said, ‘This car is right on.  It’s right where I need it to be,’ and I was able to carry really fast lap times.  When your car drives good here and you have exactly what it needs, when you get to lap traffic it doesn’t even slow you down.  But if it’s loose like it was, you get to a lapped car and you’re just kind of stuck and you can’t go anywhere.  He had it right where I needed to be that I was able to pass cars when I got to them and really make up that gap a lot because in these Nationwide races having a fast car is one thing, but being able to get through the lap traffic as quick as possible is key to winning these things.”

The girls of NASCAR are set to race 25 laps for charity during the third annual Better Half Dash on October 10 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The last two events saw Jacquelyn Butler walk away with the prized six-foot pink trophy in 2011. Last year the wife of NASCAR driver Travis Pastrana, Lyn-z Pastrana, drove to victory during the second annual Better Half Dash. This year last seasons champion indicates she is looking forward to repeating her success at Charlotte.

The ladies of NASCAR are set to run down the track in North Carolina just before the NASCAR Sprint Cup racers head out on the track to see who can do the fastest lap on Bojangles’ Pole Night. The ladies of NASCAR will drive U.S. Legend Cars International Banderos around the frontstretch quarter-mile for bragging rights and charities like Motor Racing Outreach and Speedway Children’s Charities.

Better Half Dash defending champion and eight-time X Games medalist, Pastrana is no stranger to winning, and she has a special fondness for her six-foot pink Better Half Dash trophy. “It’s actually sitting in our bedroom. None of Travis’ trophies are in our bedroom,” Pastrana said. “I’ve never gotten a trophy like that ever in all my action sports.” “It’s definitely a really fun experience,” Pastrana said. “It’s cool to get to know some of the other wives and bring the community together a little bit more.”

The starting positions for the 2013 Better Half Dash will be determined by qualifying on October 7, 2013, at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Roush Yates Fords Set New Qualifying Records

The Ford race cars of Roush Yates were setting new time records all weekend, first on the race grid and record-book fast both in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, and ARCA Series.

Sam Hornish Jr. turned in the fastest time in the battle for pole position for the Nationwide Zippo 200 on Saturday for the second straight year at The Glen in the record lap of 123.291 mph. This speed beat the previous mark of 123.241 mph set two years ago by Kurt Busch.

Eventually, Brad Keselowski would beat his teammate Sam Hornish Jr. to the finish line on Saturday to win the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. In the end, all three Penske race cars led the 200-mile race for the duration, accept for nine laps. This Nationwide Series win is the fourth in a row for Brad Keselowski and the ninth Nationwide Series win of 2013 for Ford Racing and Roush Yates Engines.

The performance by Brad Keselowski was truly amazing. Starting in fifth position he managed to move steadily up the ladder and would eventually lead a total of 46 laps in the No. 22 Hertz Ford Mustang.

He had to take the lead from his teammate and friend Joey Logano with just 16 turns around the track to go and keep Sam Hornish Jr. behind him to win by just 1.418 seconds in the end to win.

Mason Mitchell drove his No. 82 Happy Cheeks Ford to the pole position in the record lap of 93.963 on the Berlin Raceway on Saturday for Empire Racing-Mason Mitchell Motorsports during the ARCA Series. Mason will now see his name in the record books, with the top qualifying lap at the .4375-mile race track.

The driver for the No. 9 Stanley Ford, Marcus Ambrose, won the pole for the Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen International on Sunday in the record-breaking lap of 128.241 mph. This mark is one mile an hour faster than the old mark of 127.020, set by Juan Pablo Montoya just one year ago. The 128 mph mark set by Marcus Ambrose occurred during the last qualifying group and proved too much for the other drivers on the track to match on Sunday.

The new Gen-6 race car appeared to handle the track better than the old car and it was obvious drivers were able to stay off the gas a little more, which seemed to help the brakes on the cars a bit. Watkins Glen appears to be a good track for Gen-6 race cars and the times recorded back this up.

All in all, a really good day for Penske Racing, but they still have some work to do to catch Austin Dillon. They sit just three points behind after this race, as the battle for the Nationwide Series Championship continues in Mid-Ohio next week.

Drivers Revved Up On Return of Legends Million to Charlotte Motor Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. (June 23, 2011) – Just one week after the announcement

was made about the second-annual Legends Million race at Charlotte Motor

Speedway, buzz is already beginning to circulate among drivers anxious for

another shot to win the prestigious race.

The Legends Million, held Aug. 1 and 2, will once again provide the

biggest Legend Car and Bandolero purse of the year and is expected to draw a

large field of competitors including some of the biggest names in racing.

 

Kevin Harvick, Inc. development driver Gray Gaulding made history in

2010 as the youngest competitor to run in the Legends Million at the tender

age of 12. The youngster is thrilled that Bruton Smith, chairman and CEO of

Speedway Motorsports, Inc., the parent company of Charlotte Motor Speedway

and U.S. Legend Cars International, is bringing the event back for a second

year.

“I first have to thank Bruton Smith for bringing back the Legends

Million,” said Gaulding. “You’ve got 300 cars trying to make a 30-car field.

It’s really special for the young talent coming up through the ranks to put

up that big of a check.

“I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully we can get a win. Last

year we had some bad luck with a coil going out, but there is always this

year.”

The 2009 U.S. Legend Cars International Semi-Pro Asphalt Oval

champion, Kenzie Ruston, shares a similar opinion with Gaulding.

“I was surprised to hear about the second-annual Legends Million,”

said Ruston. “It really shows how considerate Bruton is to put up that money

for a young kid to have the chance to win again. I haven’t been in a Legend

Car since the last Million, so I will just be happy to make the show and I’d

be thrilled with a top-10 finish.”

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Ragan turned some heads in the

garage during Monday’s Summer Shootout practice at Charlotte Motor Speedway

when he showed up to run his No. 6 UPS Legend Car.

“With the second-annual Legends Million coming up it gives me an

opportunity to practice a little bit,” said Ragan. “I’ve got Aug. 1 and 2

kinda marked out in my calendar, so hopefully we can make it and get a

little practice that will go a long way.”

Last year, Ragan started on the outside pole for the feature event

and stayed near the front to take home a fourth-place finish.

Tyler Green, the 2010 Summer Shootout Pro division champion at

Charlotte Motor Speedway, is ready to improve upon his fifth-place finish

from last year’s $1 million race.

“I’m definitely excited that they are going to have another one,”

said Green. “It’s going to be a huge race again. I was disappointed in my

fifth-place finish last year because we ran a lot better through the season.

I just feel like we have a lot to prove in this year’s Million.”

Wentzville, Mo., native, Kyle Weatherman, finished 21st in the

inaugural event last year and is looking forward to a second chance to win

the big money.

“When they first announced the Legends Million race this year, I was

excited and I was pumped up because I feel like I struggled in the last

one,” said the 13-year-old Weatherman. “I think I can make an improvement

this year.”

Weatherman’s 12-year-old brother Clayton will make his first

appearance in the Legends Million this year after winning the Bandolero

Bandits feature at the event in 2010.

“When they came out with the second Legends Million, I was excited

because I didn’t think I was going to get to race one,” said the younger

Weatherman. “My brother got to do one last year and I didn’t get to because

I was too young. I’m just really excited and I think I can get a top five.”

The Race Cars of NASCAR Legend Return to the Charlotte Motor Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. (June 17, 2011) – The second annual Legends Million

returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway Aug. 1 and 2. The largest grassroots

race in history will once again offer the largest Legend Car and Bandolero

purse of the year, as drivers do battle on the speedway’s frontstretch

quarter-mile oval.

Registration for the Legends Million begins today and is scheduled

to close on July 18. The purse structure for the 2011 Legends Million will

be prorated, based on total cars registered, so competitors are encouraged

to register early.

“As the car count goes up, the purse goes up,” said Don Hawk, vice

president of business affairs, Speedway Motorsports, Inc. “We’re asking

competitors to get their registration in as early as possible so we can get

the purse locked in.”

In the inaugural Legends Million last year, Kannapolis, N.C., native

Daniel Hemric was victorious, taking home an unprecedented $250,000. More

than 300 drivers from 36 states and two foreign countries, ranging from 12

to 72 years old, registered for the one-of-a-kind Legend Car race.

“These are the race cars that launched the careers of NASCAR drivers

like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Joey Logano, David Ragan, Kurt Busch and Kyle

Busch,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor

Speedway. “The Legends Million is a great opportunity for fans to come to

the track and see the future stars of NASCAR compete in the largest Legend

Car race in the world. It’s also an excellent opportunity for young drivers

to get noticed and hopefully take their career to the next level.”

Competitors participating in the Legends Million are registered in

one of three divisions: Young Lions/Semi-Pro, Masters or the Legends

Million, which is open to all drivers. Each division will run heat races and

an A-Main race, with the Legends Million A-Feature serving as the grand

finale of the two-day event.

Competitors will complete time trials to determine their starting

position in the heat races. Drivers will then progress to B-Mains based on

their finishing position in the heats. The starting lineup for each A-Main

will consist of heat race winners and the first-place finishers from the

B-Mains. A total of 30 competitors will race in the Legends Million

A-Feature event, which will be 100 laps with a 15-minute break at lap 50.

Bandolero Beginner Bandit, Bandit and Outlaw drivers will also have

the opportunity to compete in a Bandolero Triple Crown event, with heat lap

and feature events spanning both days.

The Legends Million is open to all Legend Car competitors, 12 years

The Ford Drivers Talk About the Pepsi MAX 400

 

Ford has the most NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wins at Auto Club
Speedway among manufacturers with 10 and has won at least one race in
each of the last nine years.  That streak is on the line this weekend
after Jimmie Johnson won the first Auto Club race earlier this season.
•       All three Ford Chase drivers have NSCS victories at Auto Club
Speedway.  Matt Kenseth leads the way with three while Greg Biffle and
Carl Edwards have one apiece.  In addition, current Ford drivers Kasey
Kahne and Elliott Sadler also have wins at this speedway.
•       Matt Kenseth leads all drivers at Auto Club Speedway in Top 10
finishes with 12, including his seventh-place run in the first NSCS
race here earlier this season.
•       There are 12 Fords at Auto Club Speedway attempting to make Sunday’s
race.  All but two of those cars are guaranteed spots in the starting
field.  David Gilliland will be trying to get the No. 38 Taco Bell
Ford in on speed, as will Patrick Carpentier in the No. 26 Air
National Guard Fusion.

As mentioned above, Matt Kenseth, driver of the No. 17 Crown Royal
Black Ford Fusion, has the most Top 10 finishes among all drivers at
Auto Club Speedway with 12.  Kenseth, who also has three wins at the
track, spoke about his success here before today’s practice.

MATT KENSETH – No. 17 Crown Royal Black Ford Fusion – DO YOU THINK
THERE IS SOME SORT OF ETIQUETTE BETWEEN CHASERS AND NON-CHASERS,
LOOKING BACK ON LAST WEEK’S BUSCH-REUTIMANN ISSUE?  “I didn’t really
see what went down last week, so I can’t comment on that, but, in my
opinion, I think you race the same all year.  I think you should race
everybody the same whether they’re in the chase or not in the chase.
I think you try to show people respect all year because everybody has
the same right to be out there, whether they’re first in points or
last in points.”  THAT BEING SAID, ARE THERE CERTAIN PEOPLE ON THE
TRACK THAT YOU’RE MORE AWARE OF AND TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM BECAUSE YOU
FEEL SOMETHING COULD HAPPEN?  “No.  I race the same all year,
honestly, no matter where you are in the points.  If it came down to
the last week or something like that and you’re the point leader by a
bunch, you’re probably gonna be a little bit more careful, but, other
than that, as competitive as it is I think you race as hard as you can
all year.  Everybody has the same right to be out there.  Everybody is
out there racing for wins and have their own particular
responsibilities.”  AS A CHASER DO YOU WORRY ABOUT SOMETIMES RUBBING
FENDERS WITH A NON-CHASER, KNOWING THEY COULD POSSIBLY RUIN YOUR
CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES?  “I don’t want to ruin any race.  No matter where
you are in the points they’re all big races.  I think you go out there
and you’re gonna race whatever your style is all the time.  I don’t
think that really changes.  You still have to race hard all the time
because it’s so competitive that you can’t just go out and think about
not knocking a fender off.  You go out there and think about trying to
get to the front.”  DO YOU CONSIDER THIS THE KIND OF TRACK THAT CAN
HELP YOU GET BACK UP IN THE POINTS?  “Where we are, we’ve got to gain
some significant points on the leader every week to get back in it and
have a realistic shot.  I think our performance has been picking up a
little bit lately, we just have to get a whole race put together.
We’ve been struggling with that a little bit.  There were times last
week where I thought we were very competitive but we didn’t finish it
off.  This has been a pretty good track for us in the past, so,
hopefully we can be competitive from the time we get on the track this
morning all the way through Sunday when we’re done and get a good
finish.  So that’s really what I’m more focused on is just trying to
get back up with the leaders and be competitive so we can get in a
really good position to win some races.”

MATT KENSETH CONTINUED — IS THERE A SPECIFIC POINT IN THE RACE WHERE
YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO IMPROVE?  “Our adjustments have just not been
good enough to keep up with the track for whatever reason.  Last week,
the worst we ran the whole race was our last run and you can’t do that
because you’re not gonna get the finishes.  Lately, there have been a
lot of long, green-flag runs at the end and you’ve got to have your
car handling right and do the right things at the end of the race.  On
the last pit stop we came out ahead of Jimmie Johnson and he finished
second and we finished seventh without a caution, so we just haven’t
been doing the right things to keep up on whatever it is – track
conditions or adjustments.  That’s probably my fault for not knowing
what I need for adjustments.  I’m trying to give them the best
feedback I can and hope that we do the right things on the car in the
pits to get it running better.”  WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO DO WELL AT
CHARLOTTE?  “Track position has been really important there since the
introduction of this car with the spoiler and that pavement.  The
pavement has a lot of grip and even though the track gets pretty wide,
it’s a real fast track and kind of hard to pass so track position is
real important.  You’ve got to be in position the last couple of
stops.”  WHAT’S THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FALL AND SPRING
RACE THERE?  “I don’t think there’s much of a difference.”  WHAT IS IT
GOING TO TAKE FOR ANYBODY TO BEAT THE 48?  “You’ve got to prove you
can beat them.  I’ve said it for five years, they’re the best team out
there and somebody has to beat them and knock them down before you can
say they’re not the best team.  Everybody says, ‘Oh, they don’t have
momentum.  They’re not running as good.’  Well, as soon as somebody
shows they can beat them, I’ll believe it.”  WHAT TRACK ARE YOU
WORRIED ABOUT THE MOST OF THE TRACKS LEFT?  “Honestly, for me I worry
about all of them.  I’ve really just been focused on Fontana this
weekend and then trying to get back on track here and get a good
finish.”  IS THE FR9 ENGINE COMING ON AT THE RIGHT TIME?  “I think the
engine has been helping a little bit.  I think there’s still some room
for improvement and Doug knows that – everybody knows that – because
we’ve only been working on it for six months or a year, whereas we
worked on that old engine forever.  I think it’s certainly an
advantage and it’s better than what we had, plus they keep getting it
better.”  DO YOU THINK IT WILL RUN PARTICULARLY WELL HERE IN FONTANA?
“I hope so.  Fontana and Michigan are big horsepower race tracks, but
they’re also big handling race tracks as well.  It’s real similar to
Michigan, so if you perform well there, hopefully you’ll perform okay
here.”

Ford Racing Drivers Talk About the Pepsi MAX 400

DAVID RAGAN – No. 6 UPS Ford Fusion (Qualified 18th) – “I think I just
drove in a little too hard.  Our car was a little free in qualifying
trim in practice, so Drew and I talked about it and decided not to
change much.  The track is a little warmer now and maybe gave up a
half-a-tenth or a tenth, but, all in all, our car has pretty good
speed and hopefully that will wind up in the top 10 or top 15 for our
UPS team.”  IT’S ONLY BEEN A COUPLE OF WEEKS WITH DREW, BUT THINGS
SEEM TO BE GETTING BETTER.  “I think it’s a couple of things.  Drew
and I have been able to click pretty well here and, number two, our
whole company is certainly better than we were a month or two ago.
These are tracks that certainly play into our favor.  Now it’s just
about being perfect over a weekend.  I can’t make any mistakes.  The
crew can’t make any mistakes.  I think our cars are close enough that
we’ve got something to race, whereas six months ago we were still
scrounging around with our cars to find some speed.  I think we’ve got
good speed and now it’s just a matter of fine-tuning and running some
perfect races.”

GREG BIFFLE – No. 16 3M Ford Fusion (Qualified 7th) – “It was a great
lap.  I probably left a little bit out there, so I’m sure some guys
will nip us off, but that’s still gonna be a good starting spot for
us.  These cars, the guys are doing such a great job back at the shop
and the engine department, it’s big power out here in California and
you need that for the car to run good, but Erwin and the guys are
giving me great stuff right now.  I’m just excited.  My whole family
is here, so maybe we can get another win.”

PAUL MENARD – No. 98 Menards Ford Fusion (Qualified 24th) – “It wasn’t
terrible.  We picked up close to four-tenths, so you can’t complain
too much.  We’ve just been off a little bit in qualifying practice,
but we’ve got a couple hours of race practice tomorrow to get it
dialed in.”

MATT KENSETH – No. 17 Crown Royal Ford Fusion (Qualified 3rd) – “We
made good adjustments today.  It wasn’t perfect on the track, I
actually didn’t think it was quite as fast as it was, but they were
good adjustments.  We were a lot better than what we had in practice,
and just like Kansas it seemed like all the Roush and RPM cars
unloaded with a lot of speed.  Now we just have to work real hard to
get it handling well because the speed is there again this weekend.
We need to get it to handle right, like we saw the 16 do last week.”
HOW WAS THE LAP?  “It was pretty good by the speed.  It didn’t drive
exactly how we wanted it to, but our speed was really good.  Jimmy and
Chip made some really good adjustments from practice and what we were
fighting, so it was a lot more comfortable and we could carry some
speed.  It was a great lap for us.”

KASEY KAHNE – No. 9 Budweiser Ford Fusion (Qualified 5th) – “I was
looking for more, but that was pretty good.  The guys did a real nice
job and gave me a much better car.  I kind of under-drove it and just
wasn’t ready for it to run like that, but it was good.  That was a big
pickup for our Budweiser Ford.  All of the guys have done a nice job
and hopefully we’ll do some of that tomorrow and get it right so we’ll
be able to race on Sunday with these guys.”

ELLIOTT SADLER – No. 19 Reynolds Wrap Ford Fusion (Qualified 2nd) –
“I’m gonna be honest with you, the reason we qualified second today is
100 percent Todd Parrott.  He’s put so much effort and so much hard
work into our program the last couple of months.  This is one of our
newer cars – one of this year’s cars – and they’ve done a lot of work
back in the body shop preparing the body on it, getting the car as
light as we can and doing a lot of cool stuff.  Man, that felt good.
It feels good to qualify like that.  We’ve got a lot of people here
from Reynolds Wrap, and I can’t thank them enough and, of course, Doug
Yates’ engines.  It’s a good day for us so far.  We knew we were good
in practice, I just had to make a really good lap and I was able to do
that today.  Todd, it’s been amazing working with him again.  He’s
given me like a new life.  We’ve been pretty good the last couple of
weeks, we just have to put it all together for 400 miles on Sunday and
hopefully we’ll be able to do that.”  YOU HAVE A BIG GRIN.  “Yeah,
this is a pretty big grin for me. That’s a great run for us and our
team needs that.  We’ve got a lot of cool people here today from
Reynolds Wrap, and Todd Parrott has worked his butt off the last
couple months turning our race team around and getting our program
going in the right direction.  This is one of our newer cars and I’m
very happy to bring it here to California.  Todd and I were talking
about it this morning, the last time we worked together here at
California Speedway we went to Victory Lane, so this is definitely a
great start to the weekend and we’re gonna try to make the most of
it.”

ELLIOTT SADLER, Qualified 2nd – “It was a great lap for us.  Everybody
knows we need this for our team.  Todd Parrott and all the guys back
at the shop did a lot of work to this car.  It’s a car I wrecked on
the first lap of Indy this year and we re-did it.  It’s one of our
newer cars, we updated the body on it and it’s been good since we
unloaded it.  We felt really comfortable coming to this race this
weekend and that’s a great way to get started off.  I’m just very
proud of my guys and they made me look pretty good today.”

MATT KENSETH, Qualified 3rd – “Our lap was really good, too.  It’s
encouraging this weekend and it’s a lot like last weekend at Kansas,
where we showed up and all the Roush and RPM Fords were really fast on
the sheet and they all have a lot of speed.  We just have to get them
to drive well and we feel like we’ll have a shot on Sunday.  So that
was a great lap for us.  Obviously, I’m usually not the best
qualifier, but we made some adjustments and fixed the things I was
complaining about in practice and got a good lap out of it.”

ELLIOTT SADLER CONTINUED – ANY CLOSER TO KNOWING WHAT YOUR PLANS ARE
FOR NEXT YEAR?  “No, not yet.  We’re definitely working on some stuff,
but nothing yet to announce or finalize.  Hopefully, this will help –
to qualify good this weekend and hopefully run good – but, no, nothing
yet.  I wish I had some better news for you right now, but we’re
keeping our fingers crossed and we’re working hard on it.  I’m
definitely gonna do some stuff with KHI next year in the Truck Series.
 I’m gonna run a couple races for them, but as far as anything else,
I’m not really sure yet.”

in the past, but lately we’ve been to a lot of good tracks and haven’t

perform and put the whole race together every time you show up.  It
has been a good track.  Ever since the first time I came here I just
liked the track and, for some reason, we’ve run pretty well at it more
times than not.”  DID YOU RUN THE SAME LINE AS MONTOYA?  “I did not
run the same line as Montoya.  I just kind of saw his lap because I
was no pit road, but it looked like he ran pretty high in one and two
and low in three and four.  I ran the bottom on both ends.  Whenever
you get done with your mock-up run, it’s funny because there have been
a few tracks where after you’re all done with practice they’ll tell
you, ‘Hey, by the way, those guys are running the top,’ and I’ll say,
‘It’s a little too late now.’  We just did our mock-up runs and our
car was set up for that because you know where your marks are, and it
would be awful tough to change that and expect to get good speed out
of it, so I was committed to running the line that I ran in practice.”

       CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 8, 2010) – Some of the fastest drivers, car
owners and mechanics ever to turn left will give it their all to go straight
on Tuesday, Oct. 12, as NASCAR Night returns to zMAX Dragway.
       In past NASCAR Night events, more than 100 NASCAR industry personnel
have descended on the Bellagio of drag strips to take their cars down the
concrete quarter-mile. Participants can race anything they wish down the
drag strip, making this a true “run what you brung” event. Previous NASCAR
Night drag racers included NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Kurt Busch, Kyle
Busch, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth; team owner Rick Hendrick; and crew
chiefs Chad Knaus and Lance McGrew.
       “The first NASCAR Night they hosted at zMAX Dragway a couple of
years ago, I told my guys, ‘We’re going to take something that nobody can
beat,'” said Busch, who will compete on Tuesday night. “It’s a lot of fun to
go to one of the best drag strips in the world, right here in our own
backyard, and do some good old fashion, heads-up grudge racing against some
of the guys you compete against in the garage every weekend.
       “We’ll bring our ’70 Dodge Challenger that we raced with at the NHRA
Gatornationals in Gainesville (Fla.) and PINKS All Out at Charlotte earlier
in the year. We’ve put a lot of time and effort into that car and with the
cooler track temperature and night air on Tuesday, we should be able to run
in the low eights (seconds) if we can get it to stick.”
 NASCAR Night is open to the public with gates opening at 4:30 p.m. On-track
action is set for 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fans can show a ticket to the upcoming
Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Oct. 16 and receive free

Mac Daddy Dogs Make NASCAR Concession Debut
A new concession item will be added to the menu at Charlotte Motor Speedway
for Bank of America 500 Week. The Mac Daddy Dog is a hot dog encased in
macaroni pasta and pimento cheese, then coated in a panko breadcrumb crust
and deep fried. The fun fair food made its Charlotte Motor Speedway debut at
the Food Lion AutoFair in August and was an instant hit. The concession is a
creation of Levy Restaurants’ Emily Williams and her staff. Mac Daddy Dogs
will be available for $5 each at the Levy concession stand on the main
concourse.

Legends Million Winner Daniel Hemric in UNOH Southern 150 NASCAR Modified
Race
Daniel Hemric, winner of the largest grassroots race in history, the Legends
Million, will compete in the upcoming NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour
(NWSMT) UNOH Southern Slam 150 during Bojangles’ Pole Night on Oct. 14 as
part of Bank of America 500 Week. Hemric took home an unprecedented $250,000
purse after winning the Legends Million, a one-of-a-kind Legend Car race,
held July 17 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The 19-year-old Kannapolis, N.C.,
native will make his second career start in a NASCAR modified; he raced in a
NWSMT event at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C., earlier this year.
