The Sundance Film Festival was no hype

Movie News

Odepero Oduye brings the story in Pariah to life

Playing at local theatres – The winter months are the best time to sit back and enjoy a new movie playing at your local theatre or to purchase your own copy of the movie to view at home. You can also find sites where you can watch the movie for free. Pariah is the first full length movie for director Dee Rees, and seems to draw inspiration from her life and struggle to find her creative voice. A 2007 Sundance Film Festival Award winning production, Pariah is currently showing at selected theatres and is to appear in local theatres around the world on January 6th.

Odepero Oduye brings the movie to life as the main character Alike, who is trying to accept the fact she’s a lesbian. Alike still lives at home with her parents and sister in Brooklyn, which makes for a few tense and even humorous moments. Alike plays the part of a 17-year old lesbian struggling in a world of harsh criticism, while attempting to grow into a woman to perfection. Alike is also a part Odepero recently indicated was not the part she first auditioned for, during an interview with her co-star in the movie Kim Wayans. Movie lovers can expect to see more of Odepero Oduye in films in the future.

Pariah is ultimately about the individual human struggle to understand ourselves and find our place in a world where we’re ostracized for being real. A film about sexual experimentation, religious beliefs, education, parenting, infidelity and a number of other social issues that effect all of us, Pariah is a movie that will make you think more about your own life.

Speedway, Americrown dole out more than $618,000 to local service groups in 2011

Brooklyn, Mich. (Dec. 22, 2011) – The spirit of giving isn’t just a seasonal belief at Michigan International Speedway; it’s the racetrack’s way of life, providing a valuable fund-raising platform for the community.

In 2011 alone, Michigan International Speedway and its catering and concession partner Americrown donated or paid out more than $618,000 to local charities and service groups through cash donations and work programs.

The speedway and Americrown annually work with service groups, church groups, Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions clubs, masons, high school sporting clubs and a host of other non-profit organizations to provide a platform for those groups to earn money for their causes and programs during the racetrack’s events.

Imagine how long it would take a high school cheer leading team to generate more than a half-million dollars. That’s a lot of bake sales, car washes and lemonade stands.

“We provide many annual opportunities for local clubs to earn some money for their groups,” speedway President Roger Curtis said. “We couldn’t run our business without the help of these clubs; but they certainly couldn’t raise the money they need without us, either.”

Service groups annually and frequently assist MIS in a number of ways including tram drivers, car parkers, ticket stubbers, program sellers, T-shirt folders, gate staffers, hamburger flippers and soda jerkers.

Members of Acts 4:9 Church, a Jackson, Mich., church and Bible study group, drive trams at MIS on race weekends so they can earn money to fund projects in the community. They adopt deployed soldiers and their families for Christmas, buy Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys for local families in need and, most recently, enclosed a screened-in porch of a local food bank so the food bank could use the new space for much-needed storage with some of the funds they raised.

“By far, the most money we raise is at MIS,” Tim Lamphere, treasurer and project coordinator for Acts 4:9, said. “We would never be able to make as much money as we do to fund these important projects or make the impact that we do without the speedway. And we have fun while we’re there, too.”

The group has been working at MIS for about six years, though many of the members have worked at the racetrack for much longer.

Additionally, MIS Cares, the speedway’s charity arm, recently awarded $75,000 in cash donations to local charities through its annual grant program. Another $50,000 was awarded through sponsorships and tickets that groups raffle off, also to raise money for their clubs.

Service groups interested in assisting at MIS for future events may call Tim Booth, director of Guest Services, at 517-592-6666 to place your service group on a list.

Groups looking for grants or financial assistance should log onto www.MISpeedway.com and click the MIS Cares link at the top of the page.

Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike.

The best, guaranteed lowest prices in 2012 will go to customers who make a $10 goodwill deposit. New customers can log onto http://www.MISpeedway.com or call 800-354-1010 to leave a deposit by Jan. 31. That deposit ensures race fans get the best pricing for 2012.

All other tickets go on sale Feb. 1.

Hekla could cause trouble for air travellers if she erupts

Geophysicists are currently monitoring seismic activity near Hekla volcano in southern Iceland in order to try to detect possible signals of an impending eruption. Magma appears to be moving beneath the volcano, and while this doesn’t necessarily signal an impending eruption, it could be a sign that Hekla volcano is preparing to release a little steam and ash into July skies. Hekla is actually one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes, erupting about every decade, but most recently in February 2000.

Airports to travel destinations around the United Kingdom and Europe will be watching the action surrounding events near Hekla volcano closely this week. Iceland’s volcanoes have a history of sending deadly ash into the air that has in the past grounded flights leaving and arriving in airports around the United Kingdom and Europe. In April 2010, ash plumes from Eyjafjallajokul volcano caused disruptions in air travel across the United Kingdom and Europe for days, grounding 10 million air travellers.

The recent eruption of Grimsvotn volcano was very intense according to geophysicists monitoring the volcano, blasting about 100 times more ash into the air per second than the total released by the Eyjafjallajokul volcano. This could mean the Grimsvotn volcano has actually spent the major portion of its energy and could subside quicker due to this fact. This particular eruption was in fact the most powerful eruption in Iceland during the past five decades, according to geophysicists, and measurements taken of the plume over the volcano indicate the volcanoes energy could be subsiding.

Meteorologists actually tracked the plume as it rose into the air above the Grimsvotn volcano to the height of about 10 to 15 kilometres following the eruption. Ash rising high into the stratosphere where commercial airliners cruise can damage windows and sensitive parts of an aircraft, like engines, which can cause an air pla5 655695tr 8tne to stall, according to the latest scientific information. These plumes of ash can then be carried on the winds across to the United Kingdom and Europe and even around the world, causing airports to close and air travellers to change their plans.

The natural colour satellite image below was taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite. It shows a towering ash plume above Grimsvotn volcano at 1pm local time. Clouds beneath the ash plume cover much of the area, you can see signs of lingering snow to the northeast and brown ash covers a part of the Vatnajokull Glacier near the Atlantic coast.

Could be one of the answer to unrest and violence on the streets of Muslim countries

There was a call the other day by Amnesty International for the United Nations Security Council to send the issue of the deadly siege in May of the Syrian town of Talkalakh to the International Criminal Courts. The security sweep of the city of Talkalakh lasted less than seven days according to witnesses and it’s hard for many to understand the social significance of the brutal murders of innocent citizens in Syrian jails. Eyewitness accounts of survivors of the siege of Talkalakh tell a story of possibly systematic abuses of power targeted at specific people in order to try to crush the resistance to President Bashar Assad’s regime. Stories of attacks on the civilian population of Syria are being told by survivors of the attack on humanity that occurred in Talkalakh. Syrian forces have fired deadly bullets at fleeing Syrian families trying to leave the area of conflict and even ambulances carrying the wounded and dying are targets.

The underlying element affecting all people taking part in the problems in Syria and around the world and the people watching and wondering what they can do to stop the killing is the fear we all feel during these times. Fear is a strong emotion that can take control of humans in stressful situations and lead them to do things they wouldn’t normally do. The Syrian security forces taking part in the crackdown on civilians and protesters are just as human as all of us and fear is the common element controlling all sides in the present problems in Syria. Fear is the destroyer of clear, logical thought and the during times of intense internal and external stress, leads us to show the world our dark side, as Mark Twain probably would have commented.

It’s interesting and sad that the United Nations is very much a political body, during these troubling days we live through, and we need to call for action and decisions from an organization originally meant to be exempt from political pressures. The people of Syrian have in a sense been under siege by their own government and the people they rely on to help protect their families for the past 14 weeks. The United Nations sending the issue of human rights violations in the city of Talkalakh to the International Courts isn’t going to save the lives of the Syrian people that will be murdered in the deadly weeks ahead. This window dressing just makes us feel better as people that something is being said about the problems, but in the end these actions mean very little to the people affected.

The west can certainly help the Muslim world deal with problems with unrest and violence against protesters and people just trying to survive the carnage. Muslim people have very little reason to feel they can trust the west to understand their values and desires for the future. In the end the Muslim people will have to deal with these problems and with their inherent causes and it might take the formation of a Muslim organization similar to the United Nations to deal with these problems. The will and resources to deal with the unrest and violence presently occurring in many Muslim countries around the world exists. The question is whether the east and west will meet in the middle and work together to solve the problems we see occurring on the streets of Muslim countries. The problems with unrest and violence on the streets in Muslim countries could spread to the western world, especially in countries like Greece, France and other countries where young people between the ages of 18-24 are sitting around wondering if they will find work or be able to eat on a daily basis. Spreading fear like a wildfire raging through the mind and causing people to do things they would never even consider during less stressful times.

The answer to the problem of controlling fear is within us all, we just need to decide to take control of our emotions, and let our minds do the thinking. Controlling the fear running through the mind during times of intense internal and external stress is the answer to riding the world of the unrest and violence on the streets around us. The formation of a Muslim organization either directly connected or related to the United Nation and having the same basic inherent values would help the Muslim people come together as a people and learn to control their fears.

CONCORD, N.C. (June 23, 2011) – Just one week after the announcement

was made about the second-annual Legends Million race at Charlotte Motor

Speedway, buzz is already beginning to circulate among drivers anxious for

another shot to win the prestigious race.

The Legends Million, held Aug. 1 and 2, will once again provide the

biggest Legend Car and Bandolero purse of the year and is expected to draw a

large field of competitors including some of the biggest names in racing.

Kevin Harvick, Inc. development driver Gray Gaulding made history in

2010 as the youngest competitor to run in the Legends Million at the tender

age of 12. The youngster is thrilled that Bruton Smith, chairman and CEO of

Speedway Motorsports, Inc., the parent company of Charlotte Motor Speedway

and U.S. Legend Cars International, is bringing the event back for a second

year.

“I first have to thank Bruton Smith for bringing back the Legends

Million,” said Gaulding. “You’ve got 300 cars trying to make a 30-car field.

It’s really special for the young talent coming up through the ranks to put

up that big of a check.

“I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully we can get a win. Last

year we had some bad luck with a coil going out, but there is always this

year.”

The 2009 U.S. Legend Cars International Semi-Pro Asphalt Oval

champion, Kenzie Ruston, shares a similar opinion with Gaulding.

“I was surprised to hear about the second-annual Legends Million,”

said Ruston. “It really shows how considerate Bruton is to put up that money

for a young kid to have the chance to win again. I haven’t been in a Legend

Car since the last Million, so I will just be happy to make the show and I’d

be thrilled with a top-10 finish.”

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Ragan turned some heads in the

garage during Monday’s Summer Shootout practice at Charlotte Motor Speedway

when he showed up to run his No. 6 UPS Legend Car.

“With the second-annual Legends Million coming up it gives me an

opportunity to practice a little bit,” said Ragan. “I’ve got Aug. 1 and 2

kinda marked out in my calendar, so hopefully we can make it and get a

little practice that will go a long way.”

Last year, Ragan started on the outside pole for the feature event

and stayed near the front to take home a fourth-place finish.

Tyler Green, the 2010 Summer Shootout Pro division champion at

Charlotte Motor Speedway, is ready to improve upon his fifth-place finish

from last year’s $1 million race.

“I’m definitely excited that they are going to have another one,”

said Green. “It’s going to be a huge race again. I was disappointed in my

fifth-place finish last year because we ran a lot better through the season.

I just feel like we have a lot to prove in this year’s Million.”

Wentzville, Mo., native, Kyle Weatherman, finished 21st in the

inaugural event last year and is looking forward to a second chance to win

the big money.

“When they first announced the Legends Million race this year, I was

excited and I was pumped up because I feel like I struggled in the last

one,” said the 13-year-old Weatherman. “I think I can make an improvement

this year.”

Weatherman’s 12-year-old brother Clayton will make his first

appearance in the Legends Million this year after winning the Bandolero

Bandits feature at the event in 2010.

“When they came out with the second Legends Million, I was excited

because I didn’t think I was going to get to race one,” said the younger

Weatherman. “My brother got to do one last year and I didn’t get to because

I was too young. I’m just really excited and I think I can get a top five.”

Mooresville, NC (June 27, 2011) Roush Yates Engines put on an impressive show this weekend, winning in three different racing series. Roush Yates Performance Engine Group has been working hard to build powerful engines for all forms of motorsports, from professional to grassroots, and they backed up that effort with wins in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series, World of Outlaws Late Model series, and the Bowman Gray modified division.

Carl Renezeder is the proud owner of a new Roush Yates Off-Road engine and it paid off for him big time on Sunday afternoon. Renezeder took the lead early in the race and held on to win the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series Pro 4 Class at Miller Motorsports Park. This was Renezeder’s 96th short course career win and his first with Roush Yates power under the hood.

“It went real well for us,” said Renezeder, a seven-time national champion. “We had to follow for a while but a couple of opportunities opened up and we had the power to take them.”

Keeping with Roush Yates’ tradition of power and performance, Scott Bloomquist capped a big night with an impressive showing at Friday’s rain-delayed World of Outlaws Late Model feature at Lernerville Speedway. Bloomquist started off the night by setting the track record during qualifying, coming in at 15.226 seconds, or 118.219 mph. He then went on to win the first heat with his Roush Yates 436 Ford motor and hold off fellow Roush Yates powered driver Rick Eckert to take the win in the feature. This is Bloomquist’s third win in six starts this season in the World of Outlaw series.

Lee Jeffreys and Burt Myers won in front of a massive crowd at Bowman Gray Stadium this weekend in the modified divison. Jeffreys has had a year full of bad luck, but Saturday night the entire field followed him as he took the checkered flag. Jeffreys led every one of the 25 laps to win the first race in dominant fashion.

Defending Champion Burt Myers brought home win number two for Roush Yates at Bowman Gray Saturday night. Myers held off Tim Brown to take the win in the second race of the night.

“You don’t have to be the best,” said Myers. “You just have to be good enough to put yourself in a place to take advantage of the good luck when it comes your turn – and that’s what we did tonight. The car and engine package are awesome right now, you just have to have a little luck to go with it.”

Roush Yates continues to produce powerful winning engines for all levels of racing. To learn more about Roush Yates Engines and keep up with all of this season’s wins, please visit www.roushyates.com or call Jeff Clark at 704-658-1540.
